May and June brought exciting opportunities for some of the GFA Aztech Academy’s youngest players, with tournament performances reflecting the growing strength and depth of the Foundation Phase.

At the Rangers 7s tournament held at the KGV in the U11 competition, the Academy’s U10 squad punched above their weight to claim an impressive 2nd place finish, only narrowly losing out to champions Bels in a dramatic penalty shootout in the final. Facing

older and more physically developed opposition, the team demonstrated confidence, composure, and quality — clear proof of their maturity and technical ability. They were clinical in front of goal against other club sides and showed resilience in the semi-final victory over St Martins, turning the tables after losing to them earlier in the group stage.

Closer to home, Victoria Park hosted its first edition of the ever-popular U10 BWCI Football Festival. The Academy’s Year 4 squad made their mark in the Year 5 competition, competing strongly and showing their capability in a challenging field that included teams such as Jersey Wanderers and St Paul’s of Jersey. Despite the age gap, their performances stood out for teamwork, intelligence, and resilience.

After navigating a tricky opening group on Day One, the Academy side advanced into the BWCI Shield competition. The following morning, they faced some of the strongest opposition in the tournament. After another competitive mini-group, they lined up against St Paul’s in the quarter-final. Dominating much of the play, the Aztech side couldn’t find a breakthrough, and the match went to penalties. After several tense rounds, St Paul’s edged the contest in sudden death. Despite the disappointment, the Academy players did themselves and their parents proud, while coaches praised the huge progress made across the season.

Both tournaments gave players a valuable platform to apply their training under pressure, build confidence in high-stakes moments, and grow through meaningful competition. It was another example of how the Academy is committed to providing purposeful experiences for its youngest players — helping them not only fall in love with the game, but also develop the mindset and habits of true competitors.
